its the journey that you watch a film for not for the outcome. Best example is a romantic movie... you know they are gunna end up together but you watch it to see HOW they end up together.

Well, Apollo 13 was on television last night and I saw it for the first time. (I had previously assumed it was a good movie because of all the accolades the movie has received)

Last night I saw the last hour and 15 minutes of the movie. It's really a very well made movie. This will sound super corny, but I think the world is a better place because this movie was made. (not much better, just a teeny tiny bit better).

In the past I have gotten into a debate with a friend about watching movies where the outcome is not in doubt because it is based on a true story.

Apollo 13 is the specific movie we were debating about. My position was a well made movie is a well made movie, there position was the outcome is known, so it's a waste of time even watching the movie.

Any thoughts?

oh. back to the thing...you ALWAYS know what's going to happen at the end of a hollywood movies be they based on actual events or not. so i guess it has to be the getting there that's the point. original and unpredictable stories are hard to come by nowadays....

Any really good movie is worth seeing more than once. I've seen my favorites so many times I've lost count. After you've seen it the first time you know the outcome. Belovedmonster's observation "its the journey that you watch a film for, not for the outcome" is right on.

If you think Apollo 13 is good enough to see more than once it matters not whether you know the outcome because you've seen it before or because you paid attention in history class.

But maybe now we're talking two separate issues. There are certain things I cannot stand in any movie, and they are usually the predictable things.

The girl who falls down while being chased, grrrrr, just once, I'd like to see the guy (usually it's a guy) become outraged because he can't catch her, he continues to run, getting more and more pissed off, until he has a heart attack.

The girl, realizing she has gotten away, stops and watches, comes back to the man, and beats the **** out of him and attempts to lie to the papers and say that she just beat the guy up.

I also hate the love montage sequences that are put in practically every movie. I don't even know why. I think it was ever since seeing the love montage sequence in "Valley Girl" (an actually OK movie otherwise) that I have hated love montages.

I don't think Apollo 13 was predictable in the sense that the complex series of actions that were needed to give these three astronauts a chance to make it back really seem next to insurmountable.

So I suppose the ending can be predictable as long as the journey is not.
